However, India boasts of several serene locations with some breathtaking runways which will surely have you at the edge of your seat. Some of these are so gorgeous that you will be pinching yourself to see if you are living a dream. We take a look at some of the most beautiful runways of the country. After such an exotic landing, you can be rest assured that you will have the best holiday!

Agatti Island Airport, Lakshwadeep

A narrow strip of land resting on crystal-clear blue waters, this runway that is only 1.2 km long and 30 metres wide, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful runways in the world. The seven-km-long island is quite tiny too and can be covered by walking or cycling. The airport also is just 4000 ft long with only one passenger terminal and designed for Dornier 228-type airplanes. So the only airlines that operates flights to and from here is Air India.

Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh

Located in the mighty Himalayas at an altitude of 3,256 m above sea level, this is one of the highest commercial airports in the world. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks that are sure to take your breath away, it is also one of the most picturesque airports when it comes to take-off and landing.

Lengpui Airport, Mizoram

Atop the confluence of river streams lies the 2500 metre runway of Lengpui Airport in Mizoram. The domestic airport is one among three airports in India to have a table top runway and was one of the first large airports in the country built by a state government. The splendid runway not only creates an optical illusion but also has many pristine streams running underneath.

Dabolim Airport, Goa

Known for its exotic beaches, Goa is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in India. But not many know that when they fly to Goa, their vacation starts with a bang thanks to the gorgeous runway of the Dabolim Airport (also known as the Goa International Airport). As you land in the coastal state, you get some mesmerizing views of the Arabian Sea which prepares you for the wonderful holiday that you are in store for!

Jubbarhatti Airport, Shimla

Yet another small but stunning runway can be found in Jubbarhatti Airport, Shimla. The airport that was built by cutting and levelling of a mountain top has only one runway that is sure to take your breath away. Between September 2012 and April 2017, no commercial operations took place here due to the erosion of the strip because of the rains. However, thanks to the authorities, the scenic runway was restored and now, Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India, operates flights to and from Delhi here.

Gaggal Airport, Dharamshala

The land of snow-capped mountains and Dalai Lama, Dharamshala also boasts of a beautiful airport with a lovely runway – Gaggal Airport in Kangra district. Located at an altitude of 2,492 feet and spread over 1200 acres of space, the runway here is surrounded by the breathtaking mountains and is sure to leave you asking for more.

Veer Savarkar International Airport, Andaman Islands

The beaches of the Andamans are gaining popularity among travellers and the airport of the serene islands is as beautiful as the islands themselves. The Port Blair Airport (also known as the Veer Savarkar International Airport), located 2 kms to the south of Port Blair, has a runway surround by lush greenery on both sides. A tricky place for landing, earlier, flights used to operate here only during the day. But the airport was recently renovated with improved runway, lighting and navigation systems to make way night flights.

Bhuntar Airport, Manali

Good things come in small packages and the runway of Bhuntar Airport proves just that. Offering panoramic views of the heavenly Himalayas, this is a single runway located within a deep valley. There are gigantic peaks on all sides and wait, it’s not over yet! The runway is on the banks of the gushing River Beas. Yes, this is again a tricky location for the pilots but as a traveller, you can just sit back and take a deep breath as you swoosh down!
