Serene Beaches of the French Capital


The French capital of India – Pondicherry or Puducherry is a Union Territory. The more one discovers this city, the more it surprises and mesmerises them. Pondicherry is well known for its pretty promenade and many serene beaches. The city has many colourful buildings that reflect the influence of French architecture in India. Auroville Beach

One of most peaceful beaches of Pondicherry – Auroville or Auro Beach is located at about 12 Km from the city.Small waves’ washing the shore makes it a great spot for swimming. Even a non-swimmer, can play in the gentle water, rest on the golden sand, and collect shells that come in many shapes and colours. Strong fishermen boats and broken down houses that line up on the shore adds charm to the serene beach. The usually isolated beach can get fairly crowded during weekends. The beach is also a great place to surf early mornings.

Promanade Beach

The Promenade Beach or the Rocky Beach is at the heart of the city. From local joggers to eager tourists, the beach aids to everyone’s needs. Accessible to everyone, the beach gets quite crowded during evenings. The beach is home to prestigious ‘Mairie’ and War Memorial buildings that were built by French. It also holds statues of Jeanne d’Arc Dupleix and Mahatma Gandhi. Le café restaurant that stands on the beach is popular for the variety of beverages it offers. The rocky beach is a great place to sit on the rocks and soak in the city’s beauty. It is not suitable for swimming.

Repos Beach

Repos beach is the only beach in Pondicherry with a boundary between the regions accessed by visitors (mostly foreigners) and locals. The calm beach is near Auroville and is sometimes even referred to as Auroville beach. Repos beach is a well-known surfing spot and is slowly attracting more and more tourists for the same reason.

Serenity Beach

Serenity is one of the most visited and busiest beaches of Pondicherry. Providing justice to its name, the calm beach is covered by palm trees. The serene water of the serenity beach makes it an ideal place to enjoy swimming and sunbathing. Many people play games such as volleyball and Frisbee on the beach. Veerampattinam Beach

At about 7 Km from the City stands its biggest coastal village – Veerampattinam. Veerampattinam beach has great historical and archaeological significance. Enclosed with greenery, it is one of most beautiful beaches of Pondicherry. Paradise Beach (Plage Paradiso Beach)

Paradise beach is one of the most visited beaches in Pondicherry. It is most popular among tourists. The clear water in the golden sand beach is lined up with spectacular palm trees. The commercial beach offers various conveniences such as showers, restrooms, changing rooms, hotels and a number of restaurants. The pristine beach is also suitable for swimming and sunbathing. Located at 8 Km from the city, Paradise beach offers activities such as boat riding and beach volleyball. The beach can also be reached in a house boat or a river cruise from Chunnambar resort.
